Aerial Sowing

Background

This case showcases a device inspired by winged seeds for efficient seed dispersal. At low temperatures, the winged structure naturally spins, extending its descent time and spreading seeds over a larger area. The origami release structure expands only in high humidity, ensuring precise seed drop and optimal timing for distribution. When released from a height, the spinning seeds can travel much further than non-rotating ones, demonstrating superior dispersal efficiency.

Result

We tested the device by releasing winged seeds from a height of 1.6 meters. With a wind speed of 1.2 m/s, the maximum linear dispersal distance reached 2.1 meters, significantly farther than non-spinning seeds (0.3 meters).
